Divest, Invest, and Mutual Aid | Affordable Housing Development

I sat down with Topher Thomas, the founder of Coram Houses, at the Durham Bottling Co. to talk about his venture into building affordable housing units in his community (and backyard!). What started as an itch to his curiosity in how to build a tiny home sparked an idea for bringing more value to homeowners with a yard to spare and looking for passive income. His idea also benefits community members in search of an affordable housing solution in their neighborhood who don't want to move further outside of city limits to find a place to live. We often think of infrastructure in the largest of senses: Topher has flipped the idea of a huge building for multifamily housing on its head by specifically targeting the creation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). To hear more about his perspective on the history of Durham, land acknowledgment, housing development, mutual aid through community-driven housing, and more be sure to listen now!
